I was really excited about this brief as it enabled me to experience the type of work I will be specialising in next year. The brief called for us to choose a typical high street store and re-brand it in a way that would encourage more people to visit high street stores. I decided to choose the bookshop as I felt that with the rise of e-books and tablets and multinational companies such as amazon, less people were purchasing their books from small, independent bookshops.

I decided to target my store at young people and students. The name I chose, motherbooker, I was a bit concerned about as it’s quite tongue in cheek and I was worried some people would find it offensive, however I think it works well for the age group I am targeting my store at. I believe it modernises the outlook of bookshops, making it seem less old and dusty and I think is quite humorous.
My focus was primarily creating a series of promotional items for the store. I researched into various ways of promoting a company and created a few items that I thought would work well, such as business cards, flyers, posters and stickers. I also created a number of items that are very relevant to my bookshop such as a series of bookmarks that would be given out with each purchase as a way to spread the advertisement of my shop.
I did a lot of research into e-books and their popularity. I was quite surprised at some of the statistics and felt that what would work well for my store would be to advertise it as a store that also sells e-book versions that customers could download to their devices instore. I created a number of posters advertising this as I felt it was a great way to encourage people to visit smaller bookshops, furthermore, from what I discovered in my research, in the english speaking countries alone there are over 400 million e-book compatible devices. Meaning there is a massive market for e-books and as such a great opportunity for modern bookshops.
I am really happy with the body of work I have produced in this project. I think I have created a brand identity and a store concept that would work well to attract my target customers and modernise the outlook of the typical bookshop.
